Board of Directors

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the role of the STSC Board?

The Board provides strategic direction, financial oversight, and project management to advance STSC’s mission of providing well-maintained facilities where the public can learn about the safe use of firearms and develop skills in the shotgun sports. All positions are held on a volunteer basis and unpaid. Board Members collaborate with the club’s Operator, community partners, and club members to help make STSC Oregon’s premier public shotgun facility.

How do I join the Board?

Board positions are filled either by election (to a two-year term) at the Annual Membership Meeting or, in the case of a vacancy, by appointment with a ⅔ vote of the Board. An appointment lasts for the remainder of the vacant term. Interested and qualified candidates must be nominated by the Nominations Committee prior to either election or appointment.

What are the expectations for Board Members?

  • Time Commitment

    • 12 board meetings per year, held every month (schedule found here), typically lasting 90 minutes.

    • Additional time (~5 hours per week) for committee work, events, and/or special initiatives.

  • Engagement

    • Active participation in board discussions and committee activities.

    • Timely responses (<48 hours) to email, text, and phone communications.

    • Support board efforts by leveraging personal networks and resources.

    • Advocate for and align with our mission and priorities, including firearms education, safe and responsible firearm ownership, competitive marksmanship, and land stewardship.

  • Term

    • Directors serve two-year terms with no term limit.

What support will I receive as a Board Member?

  • Orientation materials and a formal onboarding session.

  • Ongoing access to the Board’s essential records and working documents via access to the shared Google Drive folder.

What are the requirements to be nominated for election or appointment to the Board?

We value a broad range of personal and professional experiences, however all candidates must meet these minimum qualifications to be eligible for nomination:

  • Are a current member of Salem Trap & Skeet Club in good standing.

  • Are not currently serving on the Board of Directors, or in any other leadership position, at another gun club in Oregon.

  • Have submitted a complete online application for review.

  • Have interviewed with a quorum of the Board of Directors.

  • Have satisfactorily passed required background checks, if conditionally nominated.

What committees can I join as a Board Member?

STSC expects board members to engage more deeply through committees and less formal working projects. Examples include:

  • Facilities - maintenance and repair of buildings and other club structures

  • Land Stewardship - administration of the current stewardship plan, periodic review and revision of the stewardship plan

  • Membership - member recruitment and retention, corporate relations, event planning, organizing of recreational leagues

  • Communications - website management, quarterly newsletter publication

What are the benefits of joining the Board?

Board members gain:

  • The opportunity to shape the direction of the premier public shotgun club in the state of Oregon.

  • A meaningful volunteer experience aligned with firearms education, competitive marksmanship, member participation, and land stewardship.

  • Professional development through collaboration and committee work.

  • A chance to connect with fellow board members, community partners, and other STSC members.
